Amazon.co.uk Review

You can almost hear Simon & Garfunkel begin to like each other again on this now-legendary set. On September 19, 1981, the duo reunited for just the second time since their initial break-up and revealed a camaraderie that had apparently vanished years earlier. Not only do they reprise their shared hits, they also work in a few of Paul Simon's solo gems and a couple of telling covers--one from the Everly Brothers and one from Chuck Berry. The band includes the best session men around. By the time they get to the sincerity of "Old Friends" and the joy of "The 59th Street Bridge Song", you sense a relationship fully repaired. After this success, they even planned a studio record together--one that eventually became Simon's overlooked Hearts and Bones--few were surprised when it did not come to pass. --Marc Greilsamer

CD Description

Years after they both inaugurated successful solo careers, the archetypal folk-rock duo reunited for a concert in theirhometown. The performance, in New York City's Central Park, was a major media event, and there's an undeniable air of pageantry to the proceedings. Bringing together several generations of listeners, THE CONCERT IN CENTRAL PARK, as captured on this compelling aural document, delighted longtime Simon and Garfunkel fans and undoubtedly made many new ones. Thealbum functions as a comprehensive live best-of, as the twostroll through immaculate, slightly revamped versions of their classics as well as some solo Simon hits. There's the fragile folk poetry of "April, Come She Will", the Latin spiceof Simon's "Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard", the generational anthem "Mrs. Robinson". Things close out on an appropriately unsettling note with a poignant version of the band's breakthrough hit "Sounds of Silence".

5.0 out of 5 stars The best!, 3 Aug 2003
By Docendo Discimus (Vita scholae) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
To say that this is the best Simon & Garfunkel album will perhaps offend a lot of fans who love their acoustic folk-pop of the late 60s. But it is, and their most accessible, too.

It was recorded a decade after the break-up of the duo, and features a full backing band, complete with a subtle, well-used horn ensemble, and Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel perform truly excellent versions of classics like "Mrs Robinson", "The Sound Of Silence", "Homeward Bound", "The Boxer" and a magnificent "Bridge Over Troubled Water".
And the presence of Art Garfunkel (and the fine backing band) makes for some superb live renditions of several of Paul Simon's best solo tunes, especially "Still Crazy After All These Years", "Me And Julio Down By The Schoolyard" and "Slip Slidin' Away", which features Garfunkel's masterful harmony vocals.

This album is much more lively than the duo's strictly acoustic outings from the 60s, and it is highly recommended as one of the very best live albums of the 80s, one that really adds something to the artists' legacies.

5.0 out of 5 stars Historic concert - never matched, 4 Mar 2002
By A Customer
I first purchased this recording in 1982 on Vinyl, now sadly worn. There is no second best on this recording, each track , the producing and editing, and the final packaged delivery is just superb. The complimentary talents of these two individual poets/composers remind us of days when harmony and culture mattered most. The highlights include "America", "A Heart in New York" and "Bridge Over Troubled Water" - all three for the sheer reaction of the crowd who were fortunate to be present on 19th September 1981. Some of us including myself were barely old enough to remember anything prior to "Troubled Water" but this recording captures S & G at their very best, reaching out, providing hope, and then leaving the world with something to grab hold of. S & G seemingly were broken up but came back together for a moment in time - thankfully David Geffen had the sense to record this moment for us. We can only but guess what could have been recorded by S & G after this concert but alas it was not to be. The endless Greatest Hits comps that have been released only have proved one thing and that S & G are as popular today and will live on - as will this wonderful concert. As the night air makes way for the dawning of another day, Central Park returns to normal. But for a second there, did I hear S & G singing out into the night?

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for a 33 yearold reminising about his teenage years, 16 Nov 1999
By A Customer
All the S&G tracks that you love in a way that is unusually familiar, without the clinical finish that the studio provides, i mean this is a good way. Every track is a gem!!
